Safety Performance and Culture: Recognising a Decade of Progress

At Antofagasta, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is fundamental to how we operate. As one of our core strategic pillars, it shapes decision-making across every part of the business. Protecting the wellbeing of our employees, contractors and neighbouring communities is central to our culture and to the way we create long-term, sustainable value.

The results of this long-term commitment are clear. In the first quarter of 2026, international consultancy SafeMap assessed Antofagasta Occupational Health and Safety systems and found that the business now exceeds industry benchmarks for organisational maturity. This recognition reflects a decade of deliberate, sustained work to build a safety culture that runs through every level of the organisation.

To ensure a robust and representative evaluation, the assessment applied a multi-dimensional methodology involving more than 1,000 employees and contractors across the business. The review compared current performance against a 2016 baseline and examined several key areas, including workforce perceptions of safety culture through anonymous surveys, leadership capability and visible commitment to OHS through direct interviews with operational leaders, and the practical implementation of safety systems in day-to-day operations.

The findings reflect a decade of purposeful and sustained progress: Antofagasta now sits within the highest brackets of the SafeMap maturity model. Our two largest operations – Los Pelambres and Centinela – have received the "Resilient" classification, a level whereby safety is considered to be deeply integrated into how operations are designed and led. Furthermore, Zaldívar and Antucoya have demonstrated high levels of operational maturity, supported by active field leadership and robust management of critical risks.

Moving forward, these results serve as a strategic roadmap rather than a final destination. Building on a decade of progress means continuing to invest in the culture, systems and leadership that made this result possible. The focus now is on staying ahead of risk by strengthening the use of predictive data and early-warning indicators, enabling teams to identify and address potential issues before incidents occur. As operations continue to grow, including through the Centinela Second Concentrator Project, we continue to build on this foundation by maintaining a strong focus on safety and supporting the wellbeing of people across the Group.
